Relationship Trauma & Narcissistic Abuse Recovery

Exposing the Covert Narcissist (Focus: Validation)

The loudest abuse is often the quietest.

When most people think of a narcissist, they picture someone loud, arrogant, and boastful. But there is another type that is far more damaging because you never see them coming: The Covert Narcissist.

Covert narcissists don't yell. They don't smash things. Instead, they weaponise:

  • The Victim Card: Somehow, no matter what they did, you always end up apologising to them.
  • Passive-Aggression: Punishing you with the silent treatment, heavy sighs, or rolled eyes, leaving you frantically guessing what you did wrong.
  • Subtle Gaslighting: Shifting your reality with phrases like "I never said that," "You're rewriting history," or "You're far too sensitive."

Over time, this systematic manipulation erodes your self-trust. You start second-guessing your own memories, your judgement, and your sanity.

If you are currently walking on eggshells in your own home, please hear this: You are not crazy. You are not to blame. And what you are experiencing is real.

Ready to reclaim your reality? I am Carl Andrew McKay, a Relationship Trauma Specialist at Help4Minds. I combine advanced psychological science with clinical hypnotherapy to help survivors break the fog of manipulation and find their voice again. Let’s talk.

The Physical Footprint of Abuse (Focus: Somatic & Nervous System)

Why can't I just "get over it"? (The Trauma Bond Explained)

Have you ever left a toxic relationship, or known deep down that someone is bad for you, yet you feel a physical, agonising pull to go back?

That isn't love. That is a Trauma Bond.

Long-term emotional abuse alters your biology. Narcissistic relationships operate on a loop of intense highs (idealisation) and brutal lows (devaluation). This unpredictable pattern triggers massive spikes of cortisol (the stress hormone) followed by floods of dopamine when they briefly treat you well again.

Your brain becomes chemically addicted to the cycle of rescue and relief.

This leaves your nervous system trapped in survival mode. Even after the relationship ends, you might experience:

  • A permanent knot in your stomach or tight chest
  • Constant hypervigilance (waiting for the next bad thing to happen)
  • Floods of panic at a single text notification

You cannot "think" your way out of a physiological trap. To heal the mind, we must calm the body.

Break the loop. At Help4Minds, I use a unique combination of Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) and somatic EFT Tapping to safely calm your primitive survival brain, clear stored trauma from your nervous system, and permanently break the trauma bond. You survived the storm—now let's heal the foundation.

Rebuilding Boundaries (Focus: Reclaiming Power)

 "No" is a complete sentence.

When you spend years surviving a high-conflict or disordered individual, your natural boundaries are systematically dismantled. You are conditioned to believe that having needs, saying no, or protecting your peace is "selfish."

When you finally try to establish a boundary, the narcissist will often attack it, claiming you are being unsupportive, cruel, or cold.

But boundaries aren't walls to punish other people; they are gates to protect your own mental health.

Rebuilding those boundaries after relationship trauma takes more than just willpower. It requires rewiring your subconscious mind so you can say "No" without carrying an anchor of crushing guilt.

Step back into your power. At Help4Minds, my award-winning clinical practice is dedicated to helping you move from survival mode into true freedom. Using an evidence-based blend of university-level psychological analysis and neuroscience-backed hypnotherapy, I give you the tools to build iron-clad boundaries and live your life on your own terms.

You've spent long enough taking care of their disordered world. It’s time to take care of yours.

Find compassionate support & a listening ear with Help4minds in Merseyside. We're here for your well-being, offering understanding when you need to reach out

"My therapy room is situated in a quiet, peaceful location, and I provide an environment which is safe, warm, comfortable allowing you to explore your feelings and thoughts, having an understanding of why you think the way you do."

How I Work- An Integrative Partnership

Every session we share is entirely unique to your mind and your body—there are no rigid scripts or "one-size-fits-all" templates here.

I provide a structured, confidential, and trauma-informed space where you can speak freely, process your experiences without judgment, and safely explore the hidden subconscious drivers keeping you stuck in a rut.

An Integrative Toolkit for Whole-System Reset

Because trauma, addiction, and chronic anxiety hijack both your thoughts and your physical nervous system, traditional "just talking" therapies often fall short. We actively combine mind and body modalities to safely rewire your whole system:

  • Therapeutic Counselling & Coaching: To untangle complex relational or toxic patterns, validate your reality, and establish unshakeable personal boundaries.
  • Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (Trance): To empty your subconscious stress bucket, quiet the hyperactive primitive brain, and align your mind with your preferred future.
  • EFT Tapping (Somatic Regulation): To physically drop cortisol levels, soothe acute panic, and turn off internal "somatic false alarms" in real time.

Equipping You for the Real World

You will never leave a session empty-handed. You will walk away with simple, practical neuro-somatic tools you can deploy at home to actively disrupt anxious loops, manage cravings, and restore deep, restorative sleep.

My role is not to view you as a broken deficit that needs "fixing." I work as your expert collaborator—helping you systematically de-program the survival habits that no longer serve you, reclaim your autonomy, and bring your nervous system back into balance.
