Decoding the Exit: How Narcissists Push You Out While Playing the Victim
If you’re sitting there right now wondering what you did wrong... wondering why their hot-and-cold behaviour is getting worse by the day... take a deep breath. You are in the devaluation phase.
There is a massive myth in pop-psychology that narcissists always neatly "discard" their partners. In my experience—both personally and clinically—that is rarely how it actually plays out.
What actually happens is far more sinister: They make you discard them.
When a narcissist starts going distant, ignoring your texts, pulling away, and picking fights, it isn't random and it isn't an accident. It is a calculated strategy. They deliberately create an unlivable environment to force you to walk away.
Why? Because it clears the stage for them to entertain and promote their new supply without taking accountability for ending the relationship.
Think of it like a child with a toy. They might get bored of the toy and relegate it to the back of the shelf, but they don't want that toy to disappear completely. They still want the option to reach up and play with it again down the line if the new toy breaks down or disappoints them.
That’s why some will hoover you months or years later—and why others won't until their current situation falters.
By pushing you to leave, they get everything they want:
-
They move seamlessly to the new supply.
-
They play the victim who was "abandoned."
-
They keep you confused and sitting on that shelf as a fallback option.
This is why I always insist on strict Zero Contact with my clients. It is the only way to get off their shelf, break the spell, stop being pulled back into their games, and actually heal.
If you had to walk away because their behaviour became cruel and intolerable, you didn't fail. You broke out of the cycle.
