Unlocking your reset button with EFT tapping

Have you ever wished you had a physical reset button for stress, anxiety, or overwhelming emotions? It sounds like wishful thinking, but the tool might quite literally be at your fingertips.

By blending modern psychology with the principles of traditional acupressure, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)—often called "tapping"—offers a powerful way to clear emotional blocks and restore internal balance. If you have been looking for a gentle, practical way to calm your nervous system and release old patterns, tapping helps deactivate the brain's alarm response and unlock your mind's natural capacity to heal.

Emotional Freedom Technique, often referred to as EFT or tapping, is a holistic healing method that combines elements of cognitive therapy and exposure therapy with acupressure. Developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s, EFT involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on negative emotions or physical sensations.
This process helps to release emotional blockages and restore balance to the body's energy system.

How does EFT work?

EFT operates on the premise that negative emotions and physical issues are linked to disruptions in the body's energy flow. By tapping on meridian points, similar to those used in acupuncture, while acknowledging and verbalising the issue at hand, individuals can release these disruptions. The sequence typically involves:

  • Identifying the issue: Focus on a specific problem, whether it’s a traumatic memory, anxiety, or physical pain.
  • Rating the intensity: On a scale of 0 to 10, rate the intensity of the emotion or pain associated with the issue.
  • The setup statement: Create a statement that acknowledges the problem and accepts oneself despite it (e.g. "Even though I have this anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself").
  • Tapping sequence: Tap on the meridian points while repeating a reminder phrase (e.g., "This anxiety"). Common points include the top of the head, eyebrows, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, and under the arm.
  • Reassessment: After completing the tapping sequence, rate the intensity of the issue again to gauge progress.

EFT and mental health therapy

As a mental health therapist, I have witnessed the profound impact EFT can have on my clients. It is a versatile and empowering technique that complements traditional therapeutic approaches. Whether you are dealing with trauma, phobias, depression, or everyday stress, EFT can provide relief and support your overall healing process.

At Help4Minds, I integrate EFT into my therapeutic practice to offer a holistic approach to mental health. By combining EFT with other evidence-based therapies, we can address the root causes of emotional distress and promote lasting well-being.
